42. Deliverance  -  III

A. Deliverance is not a special ministry for the chosen few, but a general ministry of the Church

Deliverance was an integral part of the ministry of the Gospel:

                when Jesus sent out the twelve  -  Matt.10: 5-8, Mark 3:14,15,  6: 7, Luke 9:1

                when Jesus sent out the seventy  -  Luke 10:1,17

                when the signs following believers were given  -  Mark 16:17

                during Jesus’entire earthly ministry; in fact it is estimated, that up to two thirds of His work was deliverance  -  Luke 4: 18 and the Gospels generally, especially Mark.

B. Believers can be severely affected by the demonic

Matt.16: 23,  Acts 5: 3,  2Cor. 2:11,  Matt.18: 34, 35

C. Be careful how the matter is approached

                be wise as serpents, harmless as doves;

                use the right terms;

                pray for revelation for the bound person;

                intercede for an opportunity.

D. Repentance before deliverance

                the main problem is often the heart, not the demon!

                the authority of the will is in control;

                test for repentance;

                the problem of church hoppers.

E. The deliverance session

1.            Preferably get others to pray with you  -  not alone.

2.            Worship, and declare the Lordship of Jesus Christ!

3.            Bind all demons from interference with the individual, or causing problems.

4.            Establish, that there is repentance, and agreement (Matt.18:18-22).

5.            Go through the four “c”’s; lead the individual to:

       clear out all articles linked with the demonic;

       confess all involvement;

       cancel all rights given:

    by the individual              )              with respect to

    by the ancestors              )              the problem

       command all the evil spirits to leave, and to take hands off: the person, his/her circumstances, possessions and future.

       Follow this up by confirming this person’s words by your authority  -  Matt.16:19. Say: Satan, in Jesus’ Name, I now loose this individual from your hold, and I bind you and your demons with respect to this Person.

6.            If manifestations take place, quietly command the demons to leave. At times one has to repeat the command several times quietly but firmly, as demons are inclined to be stubborn.

7.            Don’t panic!  Stay in authority!

8.            Follow up with worship.

9.            Have a towel available.

10.       Command the evil spirit, in the Name of Jesus, to release the individual, if it is unsuccessful.

11.       Continue in discussion  with the individual to establish what right the demons may still have.

12.       Pray for a fresh infilling of the Holy Spirit, if successful, and especially to possess the areas vacated; pray also for  faith and courage.

13.       Get the individual to surrender these areas to Jesus (this may be necessary, after no. 11 above).

14.       Pray for protection, for yourself as well as for the individual.

15.       Explain the need for discipleship to change lifestyles, habits, values, etc. to prevent a relapse. We are transformed by the renewing of our minds not by deliverance alone  -  Rom.12: 2

16.       Teach, or arrange for the individual to be taught about spiritual warfare. Deliverance is a declaration of war on the enemy  -  one must be able to hold his or her ground.
